One Year After Bell’s Palsy

Bell’s Palsy. If a troll was a disorder, this would be it. Like a thief in the night, this disfigurement, comes out of nowhere and robs you of your identity, confidence and any self esteem that you have left within minutes. Nature has a sick sense of humor and this is about my struggle with it from start to finish, which was no laughing matter.

Tasteless Food

On the night of October 2nd, 2017, I ordered some beef with lo mein noodles and couldn’t get over how tasteless it was. Bite after bite, it was like eating paper. It was as if the flavor had slipped into the void and left the food behind. Not thinking anything of it, I ate the food and then went to bed.

Heaviness On One Side of Face

The next day, I was attending a meeting at work when the right side of my face slowly but surely starting feeling weird. My right eye also felt like it hadn’t gotten any sleep. Feeling awkward, I went to the bathroom and saw nothing unusual, but then I went to brush my teeth and as I put the mouthwash in my mouth, I discovered I couldn’t keep one side of my mouth closed and it all came dribbling down my shirt. And like a creeping bad joke, I noticed that when I formed an O with my lips, they were slightly turned to the side.

That’s when I knew something was wrong. Fearing I had had a stroke in my sleep, I immediately rushed myself to the emergency room.

It’s Not A Stroke
