Today I pressed the button on my Blizzard hardware token and nothing happened. For an hour I sat there mashing the button before I finally came to the realization that like everything else in old World of Warcraft, it’s gone.

The tokens were made by Vasco and I had gotten mine back in 2009 when a wave of stolen accounts washed over the game. Even some officers in my guild had their accounts hacked several times. Seeing naked characters standing around Ironforge was the badge of shame that the player did something stupid to get their account stolen. Their character was naked because the hacker had vendored and sharded all their endgame gear and transferred the gold and spoils to another character for profit.

In most cases, accounts were stolen due to downloading compromised add-ons that contained keyloggers. Back in those days, there was no Battlenet, so the only thing to secure accounts was an old fashioned password and that’s it. So accounts were easily stolen and banks wiped clean. Stealing accounts got so bad, Blizzard started shipping hardware tokens and in 2009, I bought the Blizzard token for $6.50 and a second one for another account an old guildie who quit WoW gave me, to protect both accounts. Luckily, my accounts never got stolen.

Chances are its just the battery that needs replacement, but the case is sonic welded tight and it’s not worth destroying the case just to replace the battery. I figured its been dying for a few years now because it no longer quickly generated codes anymore. Pressing the button already took many taps and it had been that way for years.

The lifespan of the tokens are 7 years and mine lasted 15, so I can’t get mad for $6.50. It did its job for its time and Blizzard has mobile authenticators now which are more reliable since they can’t be lost and can’t die, and can be backed up unlike like the hardware tokens.

But now it comes to an end. I traveled all over the country with this token as I took my laptop to play WoW wherever I roamed. It generated its last code 2 weeks ago and it’s final resting place will be on top of my other WoW relics, never to be used again.

My World of Warcraft graveyard. Ain’t no Spirit Healer ressing these corpses.

Okay, I just went through the most frustrating thing when trying to link my Facebook account to my Twitch.tv account.  Everytime I tried to connect it, I would get the message “Your Facebook account is already connected to another Twitch user”.  What’s even more frustrating is that there is no public answer on how to resolve it except for Twitch’s response to email their support. Well, if you’re like me, I’d rather sit in the line in DMV than waiting on someone to respond to a support ticket. Working in the tech world myself, I have no love for support tickets and zero patience for them so I tried to figure it out myself and I did.

Not going to lie, I had created several usernames in the past so I knew something was linked to it from long time ago, but I didn’t remember the username so I kept getting this message over and over again as I went through all the accounts I remembered setting up but it still didn’t fix it.  So just out of curiosity I tried this and it worked.

  1. Go here https://www.facebook.com/settings?tab=applications to access your applications in Facebook. If you don’t trust my link you can just as easily go to your Facebook page, click the gear in the top right corner, click Account Settings and on the left side click Apps
  2. Under your apps look for Twitch.tv and delete it. If its not there don’t worry about it.
  3. Go to twitch.tv and logout of your account.
  4. Click Login
  5. DO NOT login, click the “Connect with Facebook” button twitch
  6. Go through the screens to link it and it will login with the actual Twitch account that is linked to the Facebook account associated with it
  7. Go to Settings in Twitch site and click Connections
  8. Then click to disconnect the Facebook account from Twitch
  9. Go back into your Facebook account under Apps and make sure it didn’t link itself back to your account, if it did just delete the Twitch.tv app again
  10. Logout Twitch
  11. And login to the Twitch account you want to use and connect your Facebook account. Voila!

warcraft_orcs_humans-400-400… reading the entire history of Warcraft.  A VERY good read.  Obviously it wasn’t the entire thing, the relationships between characters is just too vast and complex to cover it in an hour, but it covered the warring part of it very well, hence the name “Warcraft”.  The only races that it did not include that are in the game were Goblins and the Pandarians.  Not only could I see the reasons why the factions and those outside the factions are constantly fighting, but also the graphics evolve from a 16-bit robotic and blocky looking humanoids to life-like 64-bit dragons and elementals.  I knew in certain segments why they fight so much but often I wondered why did this fight break out THIS time, and why was Illidan and Arthas so pissed off.  You should check it out and don’t skip the cinematics  🙂

Blizzard Entertainment is just amazing.  My second dream job next to working for NASA.  Dream jobs that will never happen  🙁
