Just like the title says. Tonight I went to go see Zoe Keating play at the Le Poisson Rouge in Manhattan. I arrived at 6:45, but I had to stand outside in a line until 7:00, thankfully it was only cool and not cold. Gone away are the times of tickets, and they had to scan the ticket on my phone, an e-ticket, as we stood outside in line. One of the staff persons was so enamored by my tiny phone lol. Once I got in, I sat at a somewhat good table, sort of near the middle on the 3rd row. The waiter walked around taking orders and he had to walk around twice to my table because I didn’t understand anything on the menu lol. I eventually ordered just a sandwich and tequila. Little did I know that tequila was going to have my mouth set a flame all night. Thank god I got it on the rocks!
As usual, the show was very good. She played some old and new songs and cracked a few jokes. I found the music very relaxing at times, and others sad, I think when she played Lost, it sounded very nostalgic and whimsical, so I think that was my favorite song for the night. She also played a song with no title which after a few drinks had me mentally sort of tripping a bit for a moment lol.
Once she finished playing her set, the night didn’t end there. As I was getting ready to leave at the end, the venue turned the light son and the lady across from me asks if I enjoyed the show. Funny, the lady looked familiar to me and I kept thinking to myself, why in the world is this lady looking like I know her but I don’t. So we talked a little bit more and she asked if Zoe played a lot in NY (she doesn’t) and how I found out about her playing here and I informed her that I was subscribed to her mailing list and the conversation ended there. Then it dawned on me, the lady I was speaking to was Amy Goodman from Democracy Now!. Hoping I wasn’t wrong and embarass myself, I asked, are you Amy Goodman? And she said yes! I told her it was great to meet her and she asked my name and stuff. She asked how I found out about Democracy Now! and I told her I came across it on the radio when I lived in California along with NPR around some time in the 90s. I thanked her for her much needed journalistic work. She was there with some friends and I talked to them as well. All in all, it was a very good conversation and I’m glad I was able to meet her. Unfortunately, I didn’t ask for a picture with her because I didn’t want to be weird. Wish I had though.
So all in all, I had a very good night. I got to see two of my favorite people, Zoe Keating the cellist and Amy Goodman the journalist.
